What makes the Alfa Romeo 156 special
Alfa Romeo 156 tune: the GTA V6 and the JTD diesels
Start with the GTA: its 3.2 V6 makes 250 hp and 300 Nm and, like every gasoline 156, has no turbo. It's a rare version, built by hand on its own line. Alfa Romeo never sold the 156 new in the U.S., so only early 156s are old enough to import, usually into an enthusiast's hands. An Alfa Romeo 156 performance chip is picked per engine, so the GTA and the diesels take different GAN modules.
The gasoline engines (the 3.2 V6, the 2.5 V6 and the Twin Spark 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0) take the GAN GA+. On a Twin Spark, have the variable valve timing regulator checked for rattle before you fit any performance chip. The JTD diesels, which arrived in 1997, take the GAN GT. That means the 1.9 JTD at 105, 110 or 116 hp, the M-Jet at 140 or 150 hp and the 2.4 JTD from 136 to 175 hp.

Can a plug-in performance chip add power to the Alfa Romeo 156 GTA 250, a V6 with no turbo?
In the catalog, the GAN GA+ takes the 3.2 V6 from 250 hp and 300 Nm to 280 hp and 336 Nm. A V6 without a turbocharger takes the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power. Unlike a flash tuner, the GAN module doesn't rewrite your ECU software, so the factory program stays as it is. Don't expect turbodiesel-style gains from this engine. Those are rated gains for this engine type, not a dyno result from your car.
Alfa 156 GTA or 2.4 JTD: which gains more from a performance chip?
The catalog shows +30 hp on the 3.2 V6 GTA and +50 hp on the 2.4 JTD M-Jet with 175 hp, which takes the GAN GT. On a 2.4 JTD, clear any EGR or intake fouling first, since it can cost power on its own.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
