GAN tuning module for Volvo

Volvo performance chip: more power, no ECU flash

The GAN module sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals. Unlike a flash tuner, it doesn’t rewrite your ECU software: your factory warranty is preserved, and the module can be removed at any time.

FAQ

Volvo tuning FAQ

Volvo T5: five-cylinder or Drive-E, and which figures apply?

It depends on the date. Before fall 2013: a five-cylinder with 220 to 260 hp. From fall 2013: a four-cylinder 2.0 with one turbo. Take the year and displacement from your vehicle documents, then find your engine on the model page.

What does the GAN GT add to a Volvo D5 or T5?

Both take the GAN GT, rated up to 30% more power: the D5 is a diesel, the T5 a turbo gasoline engine. A V70 D5 starts at 185 hp and 400 Nm and ends at 237 hp and 505 Nm. A C30 T5 starts at 230 hp and 320 Nm and ends at 293 hp and 409 Nm. Those are stated gains for the engine type, not what a dyno would show on your own car.

What does a GAN GA+ plug-and-play performance chip add to the Ford-based 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 engines?

The 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 in the S40, V50 and C30 are naturally aspirated, so they take the GAN GA+, rated up to 12% more power. Example: the C30 2.0 goes from 145 hp and 185 Nm to 162 hp and 207 Nm.

Plug-in performance chip or flash tune for a Volvo?

A flash tune rewrites the software itself. A plug-in performance chip only adjusts the sensor signals on their way to the ECU. Checksums, flash counter and factory software all stay untouched with the GAN module.

Does a plug-in performance chip keep my Volvo's factory warranty?

Your factory warranty is preserved. The ECU software never changes, and you can remove the module at any time.

Does the GAN module affect my Volvo factory warranty?

No. The module doesn’t change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your factory warranty is preserved. On top of that, GAN gives its own engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.

Plug-in performance chip or flash tuner: which should I choose?

A flash tuner rewrites the maps in your ECU, and the flash counter records it. The GAN module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.

About Volvo engines

Volvo engines: what to know before you tune

Volvo tune: the badge does not name the engine

A Volvo S60 T5 tune comes down to one date: in fall 2013 Volvo changed its engine architecture with the S60 II and the V60, so one badge can mean two different engines. In the U.S. the badges read S60 T5, S60 T6, V60 T5 AWD, XC60 T6 and, more recently, XC90 B5 AWD and B6 AWD. Two families coexisted before 2013. Ford supplied four-cylinders of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters for the S40, V50 and C30, while Volvo built its own five-cylinders: the 2.4 and 2.5, the T5 (220 to 260 hp) and the 2.4 D5 diesel.

The bigger models also offered a 3.2 straight-six and the 3.0 T6 at 305 hp. Fall 2013 brought the VEA architecture, and with it the Drive-E 2.0 four-cylinder. Five- and six-cylinder engines were phased out. The letter and number show the power level, not the displacement. That holds for T3, T4, T5 and T6, and for D2 through D5.

What T5, T6, T8 and D5 mean

Two engines hide behind the T5 badge. Before 2013 it was a five-cylinder making 220 to 260 hp; afterwards it is the four-cylinder Drive-E 2.0 with a single turbo. The U.S. T5 Drive-E 2.0 is rated at 240 hp; the 2.0 T5 rows carry metric figures from 239 to 245, so take the 2.0 T5 row of your model. The five-cylinder T5 AWD 2.5 sold here is rated at 250 hp; the 2.5 T5 rows list it in metric figures, 249 and 254, so go by displacement rather than by the T5 badge. A T6 used to be the 3.0 at 305 hp. From fall 2013 it is a 2.0 with a turbocharger and an Eaton supercharger.

The U.S. T6 Drive-E is rated at 302 hp, and the six-cylinder T6 AWD 3.0 at 300 hp. Add an electric motor to a T6 and you get the T8. Find the T8 Hybrid on the Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90 pages. The D5 diesel changed too: a 2.4 up to 2013, a 2.0 after that. D2, D3 and D4 are the smaller diesels. On the European XC90 II, the T5 makes 254 hp and the T6 320 hp, so even there the badge doesn't give you the power.

Volvo performance chip by engine type

Which performance chip? T and D engines mostly go with the GAN GT (up to 30% more power). The Ford 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0, and the Volvo 2.4 and 3.2, go with the GAN GA+ (up to 12%). The XC90 T8 is a hybrid. PowerPulse, an air reservoir for diesels, arrived with the S90 in 2016. The current B4, B5 and B6 badges are gas mild hybrids, with 194 hp for the XC40 B4, 247 hp for the XC40 and XC90 B5, and 295 hp for the XC90 B6; the catalog does not list them under these badges yet.

Same name, different output

The catalog shows how far one name stretches. D5 2.4: 163 to 215 hp. T 2.5: 200 to 254 hp. T 2.0: 179 to 241 hp. D3 2.0: 136 to 163 hp. So the badge isn't enough: your car's output and year have to match.

Which Volvo models are in the catalog

The catalog lists 16 models from Volvo. The most engines are listed for the S80 (31), V70 (27) and S60 (26). The biggest gain among the models is on the S80: up to +68 hp.

Naturally aspirated Volvo engines

For 37 naturally aspirated engines from Volvo, there’s the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% better fuel economy in ECO mode. It’s plug-and-play: you can install it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
