About the generation

What makes the Volvo V50 special

Volvo V50 T5 tune: the U.S. gasoline cars and the 2.0D diesels

Volvo sold the V50 compact wagon new in the U.S. with gasoline engines only, the 2.4i and the T5, so the diesels below are European. The U.S. T5 is a 2.5L gasoline turbo rated at 218 hp through 2007 and 227 hp from 2008, which are the catalog's T5 rows at 220 and 230. The naturally aspirated 2.4i has no row in the catalog yet. The V50 2.0D is a 136 hp diesel built from 2004 to 2010, and it takes the GAN GT.

The 2010 to 2011 update brought the 1.6 D2 with 114 hp, the five-cylinder 2.0 D3 with 150 hp and the D4 with 177 hp, all on the GAN GT as well. The small 1.6 D with 109 hp, called DRIVe, was built from 2005 to 2010. The gasoline T5 with 230 hp, built from April 2007, is also matched to the GAN GT.

In the catalog, the 2.0 D with 136 hp rises to 176 hp on the GAN GT. Those are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading from your wagon.

Which GAN module fits the V50 1.6 D?

The GAN GT takes the 1.6 D, rated at 109 hp and 240 Nm, to 142 hp and 319 Nm. A V50 fitted with the GAN module keeps its factory software, checksums and flash counter untouched.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
