Performance Chip Tuning VW
Up to 30% more power for your Volkswagen
The Volkswagen catalog lists 652 engines (models: 39, generations: 66). For 66% of the engines, there are the GAN GT (up to 30% more power) and GAN GTL (up to 25%) tuning modules; for the rest, the GAN GA and GAN GA+ (up to 12%). Each engine’s figures are on its own page.
Volkswagen performance chip: more power, no ECU flash
The GAN module sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals. Unlike a flash tuner, it doesn’t rewrite your ECU software: your factory warranty is preserved, and the module can be removed at any time.

Volkswagen tuning FAQ
1.4 TSI Twincharger or plain 1.4 TSI: which figures apply?
A Twincharger carries a turbo and a supercharger and makes 140 to 170 hp, so let the power figure decide. Plain 1.4 TSI engines from 2008 are direct-injection turbos. With the GAN GT, the Golf V 1.4 TSI Twincharger goes from 140 hp and 220 Nm to 181 hp and 286 Nm. The Golf VI plain 1.4 TSI goes from 122 hp and 200 Nm to 146 hp and 260 Nm. Those are stated gains for these engine types, not what a dyno would show on your own car.
Does the GAN performance chip still work on a 2.0 TDI EA189 after the 2015 software update?
It applied to EA189 diesels from the 2008 to 2015 build years. The GAN module doesn't change the ECU software, so the update stays on your car as it is. Example with the GAN GT: a Passat B7 2.0 TDI rises from 140 hp and 320 Nm to 178 hp and 404 Nm.
Does a plug-and-play performance chip change oil use on the 1.8 and 2.0 TSI?
Piston oil control rings cause the extra oil use on the first two EA888 generations, and we found no official recall for it in Europe. GAN makes no promises about engine life.
Plug-in performance chip or flash tune for a Volkswagen TSI or TDI?
A flash tune replaces the software in the control unit. The GAN module leaves it alone and works on the signals of the engine sensors. Factory software, checksums and flash counter all stay untouched.
Does a plug-in performance chip keep my Volkswagen's factory warranty?
Your factory warranty is preserved. The ECU software never changes, and you can remove the module at any time.
Does the GAN module affect my Volkswagen factory warranty?
No. The module doesn’t change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your factory warranty is preserved. On top of that, GAN gives its own engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.
Plug-in performance chip or flash tuner: which should I choose?
A flash tuner rewrites the maps in your ECU, and the flash counter records it. The GAN module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.
Volkswagen engines: what to know before you tune
VW tune: what TSI really means
Read the engine name before you buy a VW tuner, because TSI hasn't always meant the same thing. VW's U.S. range includes the Jetta, Jetta GLI, Taos, Tiguan, Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Golf GTI, Golf R and ID.4, a much narrower set than the European catalog. Back in 2005, TSI meant Twincharged Stratified Injection: a 1.4 with a turbo and a supercharger, rated 140 to 170 hp. Since 2008 the name also covers ordinary direct-injection turbo engines. Three engine families matter. EA111 lasted until about 2012. From 2012 the modular EA211 covers the 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI. The EA888 covers the 1.8 and 2.0 TSI and TFSI.
The U.S. Jetta's 1.5 TSI is rated at 158 hp and has no row in the catalog yet; the 2022 to 2024 Tiguan's 2.0 TSI EA888 is rated at 184 hp, and the Tiguan (II) 2.0 TSI row at 186 is the metric figure for the same engine. The Golf's 1.8 TSI EA888 is rated at 170 hp, and the catalog has a Golf row with that exact figure. The first two EA888 generations, built from 2008 to 2011, are known for higher oil consumption because of their oil control piston rings. That applies to early EA888 engines such as the 2.0 TSI in the Golf VI GTI and the Passat B7. Over the years, Audi and VW revised those oil control rings more than once.
TDI: pump injector or common rail
Until about 2010, a TDI meant pump injectors (PD, EA188). The common-rail EA189 overlapped from 2008 and stayed until 2015, when the EA288 took over. October 2015: Germany's Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt ordered 2.4 million EA189 cars back for a software update. The recall covers the 2.0 TDI and 1.6 TDI of the EA189 family, built from 2008 to 2015, among others.
The 1.6 TDI got one more part with the update: a flow straightener ahead of the air mass meter. TSI and TDI engines are turbos and mostly take the GAN GT, rated up to 30% more power. MPI and FSI gasoline engines take the GAN GA+, rated up to 12%.

How a VW engine name is built
A VW engine name gives displacement, technology and power: 1.4 TSI or 2.0 TDI, then the hp figure. U.S. badges follow the same logic. Gasoline engines are TSI, and the sporty versions are GTI, GLI and R. The suffix tells you the version. BlueMotion, BMT (BlueMotion Technology) and ACT (cylinder deactivation) are economy features; GTI, GTD and R are the sporty ones. The Golf V's R32 and the Passat B6's R36 belong to the same group of fast versions.
You'll find the GTI on both the Golf and the Polo. The 2022 to 2024 Golf R's 2.0 TSI is rated at 315 hp; in the table it is the Golf (VIII) 2.0 TSI R row, listed at 320, the metric figure for the same engine. The main European models are the Golf, Passat, Polo, Tiguan, T-Roc and Transporter.
Which Volkswagen models are in the catalog
The catalog lists 39 models from Volkswagen. The most engines are listed for the Golf (103), Passat (78) and Polo (77). The biggest gain among the models is on the Golf: up to +74 hp.
Naturally aspirated Volkswagen engines
For 153 naturally aspirated engines from Volkswagen, there’s the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% better fuel economy in ECO mode. It’s plug-and-play: you can install it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
How to find your Volkswagen engine
Pick your model in the list above, then the generation by model year, and the engine by displacement and horsepower (see your owner’s manual or vehicle documents). The engine page shows the exact gain and the tuner price.
