About the generation

What makes the Volkswagen Transporter T5 special

VW Transporter T5 performance chip for a van that works

VW never sold the T5 in the U.S. or Canada, so the T5s here are European-market vans. Tuning here means European-market engines, so confirm the engine code and ECU before you order. The T5 can be a Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan or California camper, and a VW Transporter T5 performance chip covers all of them. The T5 (Typ 7H and 7E) launched in March 2003, was facelifted in fall 2009 with the body code 7E, and gave way to the T6 in July 2015. Since the facelift, the diesel is the common rail 2.0 TDI (EA189) at 84, 102, 114 or 140 hp, with the twin-turbo 2.0 BiTDI at 400 Nm on top.

The GAN GT fits the 2.0 TDI at 84, 102 and 114 hp, and the BiTDI. This page lists the 140 hp version too. The 2.0 TSI gas engine at 150 hp (from June 2012) and 204 hp (from June 2011) takes the GAN GT too, and it posts the generation's biggest hp gain. The naturally aspirated 2.0 at 115 hp and the 3.2 VR6 at 235 hp take the GAN GA+.

Before the facelift

Before October 2009 the T5 came with the 1.9 TDI PD at 84 to 105 hp and the 2.5 TDI R5 at 131 and 174 hp, and the catalog matches them to the GAN GA+.

What does a T5 2.0 TDI performance chip add on the 102 and 114 hp engines?

The 102 hp and 250 Nm engine reaches 133 hp and 325 Nm, and the 114 hp and 250 Nm engine reaches 148 hp and 335 Nm. For the BiTDI, the catalog shows 208 hp and 508 Nm against 179 hp and 400 Nm stock. The GAN GT carries a rating of up to 30% more power; the figures here are stated gains, not a dyno reading from your car.

Will a tuning module void the factory warranty on a T5?

No: the factory warranty is preserved because the stock ECU software is never rewritten and the module can be removed at any time. Pulling it takes a few minutes and leaves nothing behind, electronically or mechanically.

What does the module add to the 1.9 TDI, 2.5 TDI and 3.2 VR6?

The GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power, fits the 1.9 TDI at 84, 86, 102 and 105 hp, the 2.5 TDI at 131 and 174 hp, the 2.0 at 115 hp and the 3.2 VR6 at 235 hp. Examples: the 2.5 TDI at 174 hp and 400 Nm reaches 195 hp and 448 Nm, and the 3.2 VR6 at 235 hp reaches 263 hp.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
