GAN tuning module for Subaru

Subaru performance chip: more power, no ECU flash

The GAN module sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals. Unlike a flash tuner, it doesn’t rewrite your ECU software: your factory warranty is preserved, and the module can be removed at any time.

FAQ

Subaru tuning FAQ

How much does the GAN GA+ add to the Subaru 2.0D turbodiesel?

In the catalog, the 2.0D goes from 150 hp and 350 Nm to 168 hp and 392 Nm with the GAN GA+. Those are stated gains for the engine type, not what a dyno would show on your own car.

What can a plug-and-play performance chip do for a naturally aspirated Subaru EJ20, FB20 or EJ25?

Gasoline 2.0 and 2.5 engines marked i take the GAN GA+, which tops out at 12% more power. Figures differ engine by engine, so pick by the power rating and engine code on your car.

Which pages cover the turbo WRX, STI and Forester XT?

The turbo engines of the WRX, STI and Forester XT are the EJ205, EJ207, EJ255 and EJ257. They sit on the Impreza WRX and Forester pages, not with the naturally aspirated Impreza versions.

Plug-in performance chip or flash tune for a Subaru boxer?

A flash tune rewrites the factory software. The GAN tuning module doesn't: it works between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. Checksums, flash counter and factory software stay untouched, and the engine keeps its factory protections. Your factory warranty is preserved. The ECU software never changes, and you can remove the module at any time.

Does the GAN module affect my Subaru factory warranty?

No. The module doesn’t change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your factory warranty is preserved. On top of that, GAN gives its own engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.

Plug-in performance chip or flash tuner: which should I choose?

A flash tuner rewrites the maps in your ECU, and the flash counter records it. The GAN module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.

About Subaru engines

Subaru engines: what to know before you tune

Subaru tune: two halves, with a diesel since March 2008

Subaru's U.S. gasoline range is all boxer engines, from the Impreza, WRX and Forester to the Outback, Legacy, Crosstrek and BRZ. A Subaru tuner needs your exact engine code, since the catalog splits into two halves, and the split dates to March 2008, when the first Subaru diesel reached Europe in the Legacy and Outback. The engine is the EE20, a 2.0 boxer diesel with 150 hp and 350 Nm. It debuted in Geneva, and the Impreza received it in early 2009. Subaru named it the Boxer Diesel, the world's first series-production boxer diesel in a passenger car.

The catalog lists the turbodiesel 2.0D with the GAN GA+: from 150 hp and 350 Nm stock to 168 hp and 392 Nm. Subaru has built just one diesel of its own. In the Impreza, that diesel went into the third generation.

How to read a Subaru engine code

In Europe, recent Subarus run boxer engines across the board, apart from models built on Toyota or Daihatsu platforms. Start from the code. Family letters plus two digits give the displacement: EJ20 and FB20 are 2.0 liters, EJ25 and FB25 are 2.5 liters, and EZ30 and EZ36 are the six-cylinder 3.0 and 3.6. An i after the displacement means naturally aspirated gasoline, while WRX, STI, XT and GT mean turbo. A three-digit EJ code names the version. Turbo 2.0 engines: EJ205 and EJ207 (WRX, STI). Turbo 2.5 engines: EJ255 and EJ257 (Forester XT, WRX, STI). No turbo on the EJ251 and EJ253: both are naturally aspirated 2.5s. So an i in the name means no turbo, and XT or STI means a turbo.

Example: the EJ25 is a 2.5-liter family, and the EJ253 is a naturally aspirated member of it. The six-cylinder EZ30 (3.0) and EZ36 (3.6) go with the GAN GA+. Naturally aspirated i versions also take the GAN GA+, rated up to 12% more power. The 2025 Impreza 2.5 sold here is a naturally aspirated boxer rated at 182 hp, and this engine has no row in the catalog yet. The Outback XT's turbo 2.4, rated at 260 hp, has no row in the catalog yet.

Subaru performance chip: WRX, hybrids and models

In the U.S., the WRX was sold as the Impreza WRX through the 2014 model year; after that it is simply the WRX. The first U.S. WRX was a 2.0-liter turbo rated at 227 hp. Look for the turbo WRX and STI on their own pages, not under the Impreza.

Hybrids: the e-Boxer is a mild hybrid, unveiled on the Forester and XV in Geneva in March 2019. It reached the Impreza in March 2020 as the 2.0ie, with 150 hp and an electric motor. The e-Boxer took over from the FB20D, a naturally aspirated direct-injection engine. The rest of the Subaru range: Legacy, Outback, Forester, XV and BRZ.

Which Subaru models are in the catalog

The catalog lists 18 models from Subaru. The most engines are listed for the Legacy (28), Impreza (26) and Forester (25). The biggest gain among the models is on the Impreza WRX: up to +76 hp.

Naturally aspirated Subaru engines

For 123 naturally aspirated engines from Subaru, there’s the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% better fuel economy in ECO mode. It’s plug-and-play: you can install it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
