What makes the Volkswagen Passat B8 special
VW Passat B8 tune: before and after the 2019 facelift
The U.S. Passat of these years is a separate North American sedan, not the European B8. The U.S. 1.8 TSI is rated at 170 hp, and the catalog has a 1.8 TSI row at that figure. Later U.S. cars carry a 2.0 TSI rated at 174 hp, which has no row at that figure, so compare engine code and hp. Don't match by hp alone: the U.S. 3.6 V6 is rated at 280 hp too, but it's naturally aspirated and unrelated to the 2.0 TSI at 280 hp. In Europe the Passat B8 (Typ 3G, MQB platform) was built from July 2014 to June 2019 and reached customers in November 2014.
This page covers a Passat B8 tune for cars from before the facelift. The spring 2019 facelift, shown for model year 2020, has its own generation in the catalog. On a B8 2.0 TDI, first settle whether the diesel scandal concerns the car. The B8 runs on the EA288, not the EA189 behind the scandal, and VW stated on October 22, 2015 that the EA288 versions contained no prohibited defeat devices.
Passat B8 diesel and gas engines
The diesel range is the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion at 120 hp and the 2.0 TDI at 150 and 190 hp, topped by the 2.0 BiTDI at 239 hp. In the catalog, all four take the GAN GT. The gas range opens with the 1.4 TSI at 125 hp and the 1.4 TSI ACT at 150 hp, which can shut off cylinders. Above them are the 1.8 TSI at 180 hp and the 2.0 TSI at 220 and 280 hp.
The GAN GT fits the 1.4 TSI, the ACT version and the 2.0 TSI at 220 and 280 hp as well. A 1.5 TSI at 150 hp joined the range in 2018. The 1.5 TSI has no separate Passat B8 entry; look under the VW T-Roc 1.5 TSI for the same engine. Production of the 280 hp version ended in November 2018, when a 272 hp engine replaced it.

What does a Passat B8 2.0 TDI 150 performance chip add?
The GAN GT takes the 2.0 TDI at 150 hp and 340 Nm to 188 hp and 429 Nm. It carries a rating of up to 30% more power; these are stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your car.
What about the DSG transmission on the Passat B8 2.0 BiTDI at 239 hp?
The 239 hp BiTDI comes with the DQ500 DSG. The module doesn't reprogram the transmission.
Do the Passat Alltrack and the GTE have their own listings?
In Europe the Alltrack is a Variant with 4Motion and a raised ride height, sold from June 2015. Its engines are the 2.0 TDI at 150, 190 and 239 hp and the 2.0 TSI at 220 hp. It has no figures of its own, so pick by engine and power. The GTE is a plug-in hybrid with a 1.4 TSI and 218 hp of system output. Look under the Å koda Superb III for the GTE, not the Passat B8: the same engine appears there as the 1.4 TSI Hybrid 218.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
