About the generation

What makes the Volkswagen Passat B7 special

VW Passat B7 tune and the diesel software update

VW built a separate Passat for North America in these years, so a U.S. Passat is not the European B7. On a European 2.0 TDI, one question comes before any tuning. Engine codes CFFB and CFGB raise it: did the diesel scandal touch the car?

Yes. The EA189 diesels were hit, and the German KBA ordered a mandatory recall covering 2.4 million cars on October 15, 2015. Under recall program 23R7, the ECU software is changed. Typ 362 is the B7 sedan and Typ 365 the Variant or Alltrack; the car, also called the Passat 7, ran from August 2010 to October 2014.

Diesels: 140, 170 or 177 hp

The 2.0 TDI starts at 140 hp, goes to 170 hp, and reached 177 hp from the fall of 2012. Each of those outputs (140, 170 and 177 hp) is a GAN GT match, along with the 1.6 TDI at 105 hp. The U.S. 2.0 TDI is rated at 140 hp, which matches the 2.0 TDI row at that figure; the 2015 version is the EA288 at 150 hp. A Passat Alltrack performance chip uses the same figures, since the catalog doesn't separate the Alltrack: pick by engine and power.

Gas engines and the 3.6

On the 1.4 TSI (122 and 160 hp), an EA111 engine, the timing chain can stretch if the engine was built up to 2012. EA888 Gen2 is the engine behind the 2.0 TSI at 211 hp. The GAN GT fits both the 1.4 TSI at 160 hp and the 1.8 TSI at 160 hp, and the 3.6 at 299 hp takes the GAN GA+.

The U.S. 2.5 five-cylinder is naturally aspirated and rated at 170 hp, so it takes the GAN GA+; it's a powertrain match with the 2.5 MPI row at that figure. The U.S. 1.8T is rated at 170 hp, and the catalog's 1.8 TSI rows don't carry that figure, so compare engine code and hp before you order. The U.S. 3.6 VR6 is rated at 280 hp, so compare it with the 299 hp row by engine size.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
