What makes the Volkswagen Polo V special

VW Polo Mk5 tune: the name 1.2 TSI covers two engines

VW never sold the Polo Mk5 in the U.S., so its engines here are European-market units. Because it's a European-market car, verify the engine code and ECU before you order a performance chip. On the Polo V, the 1.2 TSI badge covers two different engines. The 6R built until March 2014 has the EA111 at 105 hp and, from January 2011, at 90 hp as well.

From April 2014 the 6C facelift uses the EA211 at 90 and 110 hp; code CJZD marks the 110 hp one. The year and the engine code tell the two apart. The catalog lists the 105 hp EA111 and the 110 hp EA211 as separate rows, and both take the GAN GT.

GTI, diesels and small gas engines

On a Polo GTI performance chip, remember that the facelift changed the engine: from 2014 the 1.8 TSI at 192 hp replaced the 1.4 TSI Twincharger at 179 hp. Both the Twincharger and the 192 hp 1.8 TSI are GAN GT matches. The diesels changed families in 2014: the EA189 1.2 TDI at 75 hp and 1.6 TDI at 75, 90 and 105 hp gave way to the EA288 1.4 TDI at 75, 90 and 105 hp.

All of them take the GAN GT: the 1.2 TDI at 75 hp, the 1.6 TDI at 75 and 90 hp and the 1.4 TDI at 75, 90 and 105 hp. The 1.0 MPI at 60 and 75 hp and the 1.2 MPI at 60 and 70 hp go with the GAN GA+.

What does a Polo 1.2 TSI 105 performance chip add?

With the GAN GT, the 1.2 TSI goes from 105 hp and 175 Nm to 125 hp and 228 Nm. It carries a rating of up to 30% more power; these are stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your car.

Does the module affect the DSG transmission on a Polo GTI?

The Polo's 7-speed DSG is the dry-clutch DQ200, rated at 250 Nm. The 1.8 GTI makes 320 Nm with the manual and 250 Nm with the DSG, so the engine is already held back to suit the transmission. The module doesn't reprogram the transmission.

Can a Polo 1.6 TDI still be tuned after the emissions software update?

The recall and its software update covered the Polo V's EA189 diesels, meaning the 1.2 and 1.6 TDI built from 2009 to 2014. The module leaves both the ECU software and the recall update as they are.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
