Not sure which engine you have?
The badge alone isn’t enough: in this generation, the same engine came with different horsepower ratings, each with its own calibration. Check the horsepower in your owner’s manual or vehicle documents and find the matching row.

Volkswagen Golf IV tune: what changes
More power and torque with no ECU flash and no new parts – the module only adjusts the engine sensor signals. Your factory warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.

What makes the Volkswagen Golf IV special
VW Golf Mk4 tune: pump-injector diesels and the gas range
The Mk4 Golf was sold in the U.S., though not with Europe's full engine range. The U.S. 2.0 is a naturally aspirated gas engine rated at 115 hp, so it takes the GAN GA+; in the catalog it is the 2.0i row at 116 hp. A Golf Mk4 tune at 150 hp could mean the 1.9 TDI with pump injectors or the 1.8T from the GTI, and both take the GAN GA+. The pump-injector diesel (EA188) was offered at 101, 115, 131 and 150 hp, and all four take the GAN GA+; the 115 hp version appears in the catalog as 116.
European Golfs also had older 1.9 TDI engines with a distributor pump, at 90 and 110 hp. The Golf IV, also known as the Golf Mk4 or, in Europe, the Typ 1J, was built as a hatchback from October 1997 to August 2003; the Variant ran until 2006. The body got no facelift in Europe, just step-by-step updates to engines and equipment.
Gas engines from the 1.4 to the VR6
The gas lineup opens with the 1.4 at 75 hp and the 1.6 at 101 and 105 hp. Above them come the 2.0 at 115 hp, the 2.3 VR5 at 170 hp and the 2.8 VR6 at 204 hp. The 1.8T at 150 hp is a turbo gas engine, and the GTI had the same output.
The 1.9 TDI at 90 hp and the 1.8T at 180 hp from the GTI anniversary model aren't listed under their own names for the Golf IV; look for the same engines as the 1.9 TDI at 90 hp and the 1.8T RS in the Skoda Octavia. The 1.9 TDI at 110 hp and the R32 are not in the catalog.
Volkswagen Golf IV tuning FAQ
How much power does a Golf Mk4 1.9 TDI 150 performance chip add?
The GAN GA+ takes the 1.9 TDI PD from 150 hp and 320 Nm to 168 hp and 358 Nm. It's rated at up to 12% more power, and those are the stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your car.
What does the GAN GA+ add to the Golf Mk4 1.6 and 2.0?
With the GAN GA+, the 1.6 at 105 hp reaches 118 hp, and the 2.0, listed at 116 hp, reaches 130 hp. On these engines the stated gain is up to 12% more power.
What does the GAN GA+ add to the Golf Mk4 1.9 TDI at 131 hp?
The pump-injector 1.9 TDI at 131 hp and 310 Nm reaches 147 hp and 347 Nm. The German motoring club ADAC rates the 1.9 TDI engines as very durable.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
