What makes the BMW 1 Series F20 special
BMW F20 tune: the build date decides, and the March 2015 facelift is the line
BMW never sold the F20 hatchback new in the U.S., so an F20 over here is a gray-market import. The US-market 1 Series was the earlier coupe and convertible, the E82, which has its own page in the catalog. June 2011 to June 2019 is the F20 run, a five-door 1 Series hatchback, and the three-door version is called the F21. The 2024 1 Series, the F70, is a different generation. The March 2015 facelift changed the engines, so the right GAN performance chip for an F20 depends on the build date. Before the facelift, the gas cars ran the N13, the N20 and, in the M135i, the N55, while the diesels ran the N47.
By 2015 the gas engines had started moving to the B38 and B48 and the diesels to the B47 and B37; the last N13, N20 and N55 cars left in 2016. The European 120d rose from 184 hp and 380 Nm to 190 hp and 400 Nm, while the 118d rose from 143 hp to 150 hp. The 125d went from 218 hp to 224 hp at 450 Nm, and later cars came only with the eight-speed automatic. The M135i first made 320 hp, then 326 hp; the M140i followed in July 2016 with the B58 engine and 340 hp. The 135i of that U.S. coupe, a turbocharged inline-six that went from twin turbos to a single twin-scroll turbo for 2011, is a common tuning platform, but it is not the F20 M135i.

BMW F20 118d or 120d: does the N47 timing chain matter before a tune?
A rattle is the warning sign, and the N47 chain sits at the back of the engine. Have it checked from about 100 thousand km, since chain failures are known on BMW diesels up to 2015. The B47, which took over in March 2015, is a different engine.
Stage 1 or a GAN performance chip on a BMW 118d: what is the difference?
Stage 1 normally means a software change, and a flash tune swaps the factory software in the engine control unit. A GAN performance chip doesn't replace that software. The ECU software is never changed and the module can be removed at any time, so your factory warranty is preserved.
Is my BMW 116i F20 with 109 hp the older 136 hp engine?
No. The 116i with 136 hp and the 1.6-liter N13 was built until January 2015. After the facelift the 116i has the 1.5-liter three-cylinder B38 with 109 hp and 180 Nm, and that is the engine in the catalog.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
