What makes the BMW i8 special
BMW i8 tune: the gasoline half of a plug-in hybrid
Can you tune a BMW i8? Yes, but only the gasoline half: a GAN module works with the 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder B38 (231 hp, 320 Nm). The front axle runs on an electric motor, and the full system is rated 362 hp, or 374 hp from May 2018. U.S. spec sheets list that gasoline engine at 228 hp, which is the same engine as the 231 hp catalog row below, only rated in different units.
The catalog lists a single engine, the 1.5h at 231 hp. With the GAN GA it reaches 259 hp and 358 Nm. Those are rated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading of your car. BMW built the I12 Coupe from 2014 to June 2020 and the I15 Roadster from 2018.

BMW i8 performance chip: which part of the 374 hp does it work on?
The catalog figures are for the gasoline engine at 231 hp. The 374 hp is the system figure, electric motor included. For this engine the GAN GA is rated up to 12% more power. That applies to the gasoline engine alone, not to system output.
BMW i8 chip tuning: plug-in module or flash tune?
The factory software stays as it is with a GAN module; a flash tune replaces it. The ECU software is never changed, so your factory warranty is preserved, and you can remove the module at any time.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
