What makes the Mercedes-Benz C W204 special

Mercedes W204 C-Class tune: check the engine before the badge

Mercedes sold the W204 C-Class in the U.S. mainly for model years 2008 through 2014, and the coupe continued through 2015. U.S. cars were badged C250, C300, C350 and C63 AMG, so the CDI diesel rows below are European. The European OM 651 diesel (C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI) has two known weak points: its Delphi piezo injectors and its chain tensioner.

On 2008 to 2011 engines the injectors gave out at around 50 thousand km, and the car dropped into limp mode. The OM 651 chain tensioner was recalled in 2014 for cars built between February and November 2014. Mechanical parts, injectors and chain included, are beyond what a performance chip can fix or replace, so have a shop check both before you fit one.

Which GAN line fits which W204

For the C 180 CGI, C 200 CGI and C 250 CGI, the performance chip is the GAN GT. The U.S. C250 of 2012 through 2014 is a turbocharged 1.8-liter four rated at 201 hp, so it falls in the GAN GT group. Every CDI diesel, C 200 CDI through C 350 CDI, uses the GAN GT as well. The V6 engines of the C 280, C 300 and C 350, and the C 200 Kompressor with 184 hp, take the GAN GA+.

The naturally aspirated U.S. C300 (228 hp from 2008 through 2011) and C350 (302 hp from 2012 through 2014) belong to that group, as the C 300 row at 231 hp and the C 350 row at 306 hp. The C63 AMG's 6.2-liter V8, rated at 451 hp, is naturally aspirated too, so it is a GAN GA+ case, not a turbo one. Pick the tuner by engine code and build year, not by the badge. The W204 sedan, the S204 wagon and the C204 coupe share one catalog generation, so all three use the same engine figures.

European C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI (OM 651): what to check before a tune?

Solenoid injectors reached the 220 CDI in mid-2010 or spring 2011. The 250 CDI kept piezo injectors; a service action swapped them for solenoid ones and a new control unit. Both use the GAN GT: the C 220 CDI at 170 hp (OM 646 or OM 651) and the C 250 CDI at 204 hp and 500 Nm.

C 180, C 200 CGI and C 250 CGI (M271): what does a GAN performance chip change?

The C 250 CGI, an M271 EVO gas turbo, starts at 204 hp and 310 Nm in the catalog and reaches 261 hp and 397 Nm with the GAN GT. Those are the rated figures for this engine type, not a dyno result from your car. The GAN module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals; the engine's factory protections stay active.

Which GAN performance chip fits a European W204 C 180?

The gas C 180 makes 156 hp in every version. Until October 2008 it is the 1.8 Kompressor, from April 2008 to April 2010 the 1.6 BlueEFFICIENCY, from November 2009 to April 2012 the 1.8 CGI, and after that the 1.6 turbo M274. The CGI and M274 versions take the GAN GT, so the build date decides.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
