What makes the Mercedes-Benz SLK R170 special
Mercedes SLK 320 tune (R170): the V6 and the Kompressor side by side
Mercedes sold the R170 SLK roadster in the U.S. for model years 1998 through 2004. In the U.S. it was badged SLK 230 Kompressor, SLK 320 and SLK 32 AMG. The SLK 320 and the SLK 230 Kompressor make their power in different ways. In the catalog, the 320 is a 3.2-liter V6 at 218 hp and 310 Nm, while the 230 Kompressor is a supercharged engine at 197 hp. The V6 came with the facelift of February 2000, and the R170 itself ran from 1996 until the R171 took over in spring 2004. The catalog has one engine on the R170 page, the naturally aspirated SLK 320, and it takes the GAN GA+.
The GAN GA+ takes it from 218 hp and 310 Nm to 244 hp and 347 Nm. These are the rated gains for the engine type, not what a dyno would show on your car. For a naturally aspirated V6 like this, the GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power. The SLK 32 AMG, a supercharged 3.2 V6 at 349 hp, has no row in the catalog. The R171, the SLK 350 and the SLK 400 belong to the next generation.

You will find the SLK 230 Kompressor on the Mercedes SLK R171 page. The SLK 200 Kompressor has no separate R170 listing: the same engine appears as the 200 Kompressor 2.0 of the Mercedes C-Class W203.
How much does the GAN GA+ add to the SLK 320?
In the catalog, the SLK 320 gains 26 hp and 37 Nm. It plugs into the existing connectors, writes nothing to the ECU, and unplugs in about a minute.
SLK R170 performance chip or flash tune: what is the difference?
With a flash tune, the factory software in the engine control unit gets replaced; the GAN performance chip leaves that software untouched. Your factory warranty is preserved: the factory ECU software is never changed, and you can remove the module whenever you like.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
