Performance Chip Tuning Smart
Up to 30% more power for your Smart
The Smart catalog lists 27 engines (models: 3, generations: 5). For 26% of the engines, there are the GAN GT (up to 30% more power) and GAN GTL (up to 25%) tuning modules; for the rest, the GAN GA and GAN GA+ (up to 12%). Each engine’s figures are on its own page.
Smart performance chip: more power, no ECU flash
The GAN module sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals. Unlike a flash tuner, it doesn’t rewrite your ECU software: your factory warranty is preserved, and the module can be removed at any time.

Smart tuning FAQ
What can a GAN performance chip do for the smart fortwo 453 with the 0.9 turbo?
In the catalog, the 0.9 turbo goes from 90 hp and 135 Nm to 112 hp and 172 Nm with the GAN GT. No entry yet for the 109 hp Brabus, which needs Super Plus fuel. The GAN GT is rated up to 30% more power on turbo gasoline engines; those are stated gains for the engine type, not what a dyno would show on your car.
Which versions of the smart fortwo cdi and the forfour 1.5 cdi does the catalog cover?
Starting at 41 hp, the fortwo 0.8 cdi went to 45 hp in 2007 and 54 hp in July 2009. The forfour 1.5 cdi has 68 and 95 hp versions. Each of those outputs has a GAN GT entry.
Which GAN module fits the 0.7 turbo of the fortwo 450 and the Roadster?
Both run the Mercedes M160. The factory Brabus 0.7 (75 hp) is simply the top output of the family that includes the 50 and 61 hp versions. The catalog pairs these engines with the GAN GA+, which is rated up to 12%.
Plug-in performance chip or flash tune for a smart?
A smart's ECU can be tuned two ways. A flash tune rewrites the factory software; the plug-in box sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. The GAN module never touches the factory software, checksums or flash counter, and the engine keeps all of its factory protections. Your factory warranty is preserved. The ECU software never changes, and you can remove the module at any time.
Does the GAN module affect my Smart factory warranty?
No. The module doesn’t change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your factory warranty is preserved. On top of that, GAN gives its own engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.
Plug-in performance chip or flash tuner: which should I choose?
A flash tuner rewrites the maps in your ECU, and the flash counter records it. The GAN module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.
Smart engines: what to know before you tune
smart fortwo tune: which smart do you drive?
Only the fortwo was sold here, as gasoline through the 2017 model year and as the electric drive through 2019; the forfour, the Roadster and the diesels never were. The last U.S. gasoline fortwo had a turbocharged three-cylinder rated at 89 hp, which is the catalog's 0.9T 90 row in metric PS. Fuel is a question for your owner's manual: U.S. specs list premium gasoline. First, pin down which smart you drive: a fortwo, a forfour or a Roadster, and which generation. For a fortwo tuner, the engine family picks the module, and that family changes with every generation.
Mercedes built the M160 for the fortwo C450 (1998 to 2007) and the Roadster (2002 to 2005): a three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine of 0.6 or 0.7 liters. From March 2007 to November 2014, the fortwo C451 ran a Mitsubishi 1.0. The naturally aspirated version makes 61 or 71 hp, the turbo 84 hp, and the Brabus 98 or 102 hp. Then came the 2014 fortwo C453, built on the Renault Twingo III platform with its engines: a naturally aspirated 1.0 and a 0.9 turbo (90 hp, or 109 hp in the Brabus). cdi means diesel, and there are two: the 0.8 in the fortwo and the 1.5 in the first forfour. Don't confuse them with the 1.0 mhd, a gasoline engine with start-stop and no electric motor. Gasoline production of the fortwo C453 ended in June 2019, after orders closed in March 2019.
Which performance chip fits which engine
The GAN GT, rated up to 30% more power, fits the cdi diesels and the 0.9 turbo. The catalog matches the 0.6 and 0.7 turbo engines of the fortwo C450 and the Roadster with the GAN GA+, rated up to 12%. All three outputs of the Roadster's 0.7 turbo are in the catalog: 61, 82 and 101 hp, the last one being the Brabus. The GAN GA+ also fits the naturally aspirated 1.0 of the fortwo C453.
On a fortwo C451, note that the 84 hp turbo and the Brabus versions share the 1.0 turbo and differ only in output. Among the C451 turbo versions, the catalog has the 98 hp Brabus. You won't find the 84 hp turbo or the 102 hp Brabus there yet. The fortwo C453 shares its 0.9 between the 90 hp turbo and the 109 hp Brabus.

Two different forfours
The forfour name covers two separate cars. Version one is the 2004 to 2006 W454, built on the Mitsubishi Colt platform. It offered gasoline engines of 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5 liters, a 1.5 cdi diesel and a 177 hp Brabus 1.5 turbo. No catalog entry exists for that Brabus 1.5 turbo.
What is in the catalog for this W454: the 1.1, the 1.3, the 1.5 and the 1.5 cdi. The 2014 W453 shares its platform and engines with the fortwo C453, and its gasoline versions ended in June 2019. The electric smart models are not covered on this page.
Which Smart models are in the catalog
The catalog lists 3 models from Smart. The most engines are listed for the ForTwo (16), ForFour (8) and Roadster (3). The biggest gain among the models is on the ForFour: up to +29 hp.
Naturally aspirated Smart engines
For 9 naturally aspirated engines from Smart, there’s the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% better fuel economy in ECO mode. It’s plug-and-play: you can install it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
