What makes the Suzuki Vitara special

Suzuki Vitara tune: Sidekick, Vitara or Grand Vitara?

In the U.S. the first Vitara was sold as the Suzuki Sidekick, with the Geo Tracker as its twin, and the Vitara name arrived for model year 1999. Suzuki ended its U.S. car sales in 2012, so a 2015 or later Vitara here is a gray-market import. In Europe, Suzuki sold the Grand Vitara from 1998 to 2015, so a Vitara tuner for those years really means a Grand Vitara. The first Vitara was sold from 1988 to 1998, and Santana built it in Spain through 2005. The current LY dates from 2015. Start with the generation, because the catalog mixes engines from the Grand Vitara JT and the LY.

Take the 1.9 DDiS rated at 129 hp and 300 Nm: it comes from the Grand Vitara JT, not from today's Vitara. The 1.9 HDI at 90 hp and the 2.0 HDI at 109 hp are earlier-car engines too, not LY. Gas engines on the first European Vitara were 1.6-liter units at 97 hp, then a V6 at 136 hp from 1995. A 1.9-liter turbo diesel at 88 hp followed from 1997. The U.S. Sidekick Sport and Vitara ran naturally aspirated gas engines, a 1.8 at 120 hp and a 2.0 at 127 hp, and the catalog has no row at those outputs yet.

The current Vitara (LY)

At its 2015 launch the LY offered a 1.6 VVT gas engine (120 hp, 156 Nm) and a 1.6 DDiS diesel (120 hp, 320 Nm). The 2015 Vitara S added the 1.4 BoosterJet at 140 hp. Any LY can have two-wheel drive or ALLGRIP four-wheel drive. Both 1.6 engines went in fall 2018 when the 1.0 BoosterJet arrived, and from April 2020 the 1.4 BoosterJet added a 48-volt mild hybrid. The 1.5 Dualjet full hybrid, new in the first quarter of 2022, is listed in the catalog at 116 hp of system output.

Suzuki gave the LY its second facelift in April 2024. Look for the 1.4 BoosterJet, 129 hp mild hybrid included, on the Suzuki Vitara 2015 page. You won't find the 1.0 BoosterJet in the catalog.

What does a GAN GT performance chip add to the Vitara 1.6 DDiS?

Fitted with the GAN GT, the 1.6 DDiS rises from 120 hp / 320 Nm to 156 hp / 409 Nm. Suzuki sold that diesel from 2015 to 2018, until the BoosterJet range replaced it. For turbo engines GAN offers the GT, rated at up to 30% more power. Those are rated gains for this engine type, not a dyno result from your own car.

Why does the catalog show 117 hp and 118 hp for the 1.6 gas engine, and is it one engine?

Both are the same 1.6 VVT: Suzuki's rating is 120 hp and 156 Nm, while the catalog splits it into 117 hp and 118 hp rows. Either version takes the GAN GA+ or the GAN GA, rated at up to 12% more power.

On the 2022 Vitara 1.5 Hybrid, what does the performance chip act on?

The 1.5 Hybrid takes the GAN GA+ too, and the module works on the gas engine, not on the electric motor. The catalog's 116 hp is the full hybrid's system output, while the gas engine alone makes about 101 to 102 hp and 138 Nm. The system adds a 33 hp electric motor and a six-speed automated transmission.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
