About the generation

What makes the Audi A4 B8 special

Audi A4 B8 tune: check oil consumption first, then the engine

The B8 A4 reached the U.S. with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine. Oil use is the known weak spot on a B8 (Typ 8K) with a 1.8 TFSI or 2.0 TFSI gas engine built from 2008 to mid-2011. Early EA888 engines had oil control rings that were too narrow; use can rise between 40,000 and 70,000 km, and Audi describes the cases as isolated.

Measure how much oil the engine uses before you fit any GAN performance chip. An Avant is tuned like the sedan, because the engine counts and the body doesn't. The 2.0T is the engine behind most U.S. A4 tune questions, and the 2009–2013 car is rated at 211 hp, which matches the 2.0 TFSI row at 211 hp.

Stock and tuned hp by engine

Europe also had the 2.0 TDI in several outputs: 150 hp goes to 188 hp, and 177 hp goes to 210 hp. A 190 hp version from March 2014 reaches 225 hp. On the gas side, 160 hp becomes 206 hp on the 1.8 TFSI, and the 170 hp version becomes 218 hp.

From 2014 through 2016 the U.S. 2.0T is rated at 220 hp, so use the 2.0 TFSI row at 220 hp. Add the 3.0 TDI at 245 hp (286 hp tuned) and the supercharged 3.0 TFSI at 272 hp (343 hp tuned). The 3.2 FSI (265 hp) is a naturally aspirated V6. It takes the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power, and reaches 286 hp.

Will a performance chip make a B8 2.0 TFSI burn more oil?

Consumption goes past 1 liter per 1,000 km on some affected cars. Extra power means extra load, so check any engine that already uses oil before you raise its output. Also watch the timing chain tensioner on the first-generation EA888, another known weak spot.

A4 B8 2.0 TDI tuning: which version is mine?

European diesel codes by output: CAGA or CJCA for 143 hp, CJCD, CMFB or CSUA for 150 hp, CGLC for 177 hp and CNHA for 190 hp. A 2015 U.S. A4 is a 220 hp 2.0T, so these diesel codes don't apply to it.

Audi A4 performance chip: how does GAN differ from a flash tune?

A flash tune rewrites the ECU software, while a GAN performance chip adjusts the sensor signals and leaves the factory software, checksums and flash counter untouched. Your factory warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time. Treat these as rated gains for each engine type, not as dyno readings from your car.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
