What makes the BMW X5 G05 special
BMW X5 G05 tune: diesels and gas cars
The G05 is sold in the U.S. as the xDrive40i, the xDrive50e and the M60i, so the diesel rows below are European. BMW has built the X5 G05 since November 2018, and the catalog splits it into diesels and gas cars, each with its own engines. The 2019 to 2023 U.S. xDrive40i is rated at 335 hp and the 2020 to 2023 M50i at 523 hp, a little under the catalog's 340 hp and 530 hp rows, so use those two rows. The diesels use the B57 six-cylinder: the xDrive30d has 265 hp and 620 Nm, and the M50d has four turbos and 400 hp. From July 2020 the xDrive30d makes 286 hp with a mild hybrid.
On the gas side, the xDrive40i uses the B58 and the M50i uses the twin-turbo V8 N63 with 530 hp. For an xDrive40i tune, note that it made 340 hp until September 2020 and 333 hp from December 2020, with 450 Nm both times. The April 2023 facelift brought a 381 hp xDrive40i, the M60i in place of the M50i and the xDrive50e in place of the xDrive45e. The U.S. xDrive45e is a turbo six plus an electric motor rated at 389 hp, the same figure as the xDrive45e row. Start from the engine and the build date, because the body code stays the same through all of these versions.

In the catalog the M50i goes from 530 hp and 750 Nm to 620 hp and 878 Nm with the GAN GT. Gains are stated for the engine type, not measured on your car.

Is the BMW X5 G05 xDrive40i a 340 hp or a 333 hp car?
The technical data list 340 hp from November 2018 to September 2020 and 333 hp from December 2020, at the same 450 Nm. According to BimmerToday, the engine itself didn't change; the figure was adapted to the 48-volt on-board network, as on the 540i. The catalog's xDrive40i is the 340 hp version. The 333 hp xDrive40i has no row of its own for the X5; the same engine is in the catalog as the 540i of the BMW 5 Series G30. A 2019 to 2023 U.S. xDrive40i is rated at 335 hp, which matches neither European figure; the 340 hp row is the one to use.
BMW X5 performance chip or flash tune: what is the difference?
A flash tune replaces the factory software in the engine control unit. The GAN module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, so the factory software stays untouched. The ECU software is never changed and the module can be removed at any time, so your factory warranty is preserved.
Which GAN module fits the European BMW X5 xDrive30d with 286 hp or the xDrive40d?
The 286 hp xDrive30d and the xDrive40d have no row of their own for the X5; the same engines are listed as the 30d and the 40d of the BMW X6 G06. The xDrive40d was built from April 2020 to February 2023 with 340 hp and 700 Nm. Neither diesel is a regular U.S. X5, where the gas, plug-in and V8 versions are the ones to look for.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
