What makes the Land Rover Range Rover special
Range Rover tune: the body code decides the engine
Start with the body code: the catalog groups the P38A, the L322 and the L405 under one Range Rover name. Land Rover has sold the Range Rover in the U.S. since the 1987 model year. The P38A (1994 to 2002) is the second generation, with Rover gas V8 engines and a BMW 2.5 TD diesel of 136 hp. The L322 (2002 to 2012) ran the BMW 3.0 Td6 at 177 hp until March 2006, then the 3.6 TDV8 at 272 hp. The 4.4 TDV8 with 313 hp took over in July 2010. L322 gas engines start with the 4.4 V8 at 286 hp, later 305 hp (306 hp in the catalog), and top out at the 4.2 V8 Supercharged with 396 hp. For a Range Rover Supercharged tune, the U.S. 5.0 supercharged V8 was rated at 510 hp through 2017, the catalog's 5.0T SC row, while the 518 hp version from 2018 has no row yet.
From August 2009 the range also offered a 5.0 V8 with 375 hp and a supercharged 5.0 with 510 hp. On older high-mileage L322 V8s, have the timing chain checked before you tune. The L405 (2012 to 2021) has the 3.0 TDV6 at 258 hp, the 3.0 SDV6 at 275 hp and the 4.4 SDV8 at 339 hp, with the Ingenium D300 and D350 arriving later. The U.S. diesel, the Td6, is a 3.0 V6 turbodiesel rated at 254 hp, so it is the catalog's 3.0 TDV6 258 hp row, not the older BMW 3.0 TD6 row. The L405 gas lineup offers the 3.0 V6 Supercharged at 340 or 380 hp and the 5.0 V8 Supercharged at 510 to 565 hp. In the U.S., the 3.0 supercharged V6 was rated at 340 hp or 380 hp, and both ratings have a catalog row.
Which GAN module fits which Range Rover
Diesel Range Rovers use the GAN GT: the 3.0 Td6, 3.6 TDV8 and 4.4 TDV8 of the L322, and the 3.0 TDV6 and 4.4 SDV8 of the L405. The 3.0 and 5.0 supercharged engines take the GAN GT too, while the catalog matches the 4.2 V8 Supercharged to the GAN GA+. The naturally aspirated 4.4 V8, at 286 and 306 hp, uses the GAN GA+. The 4.4 TDV8 is listed at 313 hp and 700 Nm, and the GAN GT takes it to 366 hp and 819 Nm. The 3.6 TDV8 at 272 hp gains 71 hp and 140 Nm, and the 3.0 Td6 at 177 hp gains 37 hp and 82 Nm. Those are rated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
What do the L405 3.0 TDV6 and the 4.4 SDV8 gain?
The 3.0 TDV6 at 258 hp gains 68 hp and 134 Nm, and the 4.4 SDV8 at 339 hp (340 hp in the catalog) gains 58 hp and 119 Nm.
Which module fits the supercharged V8 in a Range Rover Vogue?
Some markets call the car the Range Rover Vogue; U.S. badges have included HSE, Supercharged and Autobiography. Under either name, the 5.0 V8 Supercharged takes the GAN GT, and the 4.2 V8 Supercharged of 2005 to 2009 takes the GAN GA+. The 4.2 Supercharged at 396 hp gains 32 hp and 44 Nm on the GAN GA+, and the 5.0 Supercharged at 510 hp gains 74 hp and 85 Nm on the GAN GT.
What does a GAN GA+ add to the Range Rover 4.4 V8?
The 286 hp BMW engine gains 23 hp and 35 Nm; the 306 hp Jaguar engine gains 24 hp and 35 Nm. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power, which is the ceiling for a naturally aspirated V8.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
