What makes the Mazda 3 III special

Mazda3 tune on the BM and BN: U.S. model years and engines

Mazda sold the third-generation Mazda3 in the U.S. for model years 2014 through 2018; the redesigned 2019 Mazda3 is the fourth generation. The U.S. 2.5 SKYACTIV-G is rated at 184 hp, and the table has a 184 hp row. The U.S. 2.0 SKYACTIV-G is rated at 155 hp, the catalog has no row at that figure, and as a naturally aspirated engine it takes the GAN GA+. In Europe the diesel share of the BM and BN fell from 20% in 2014 to 5% in 2018. The European hatchback launched on October 18, 2013, the sedan followed on February 14, 2014, and the BN facelift came in February 2017, so a 2013 hatchback is an early BM. Production for Europe ended in March 2019.

For a Mazda3 performance chip, the gas engines are the 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-G 100 and the 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G 120 and 165; all three take the GAN GA+. Direct injection, no turbo: the SKYACTIV-G 100 delivers 100 hp and 150 Nm. The six-speed automatic goes with the SKYACTIV-G 120 and with both diesels. The GAN GT is the match for the 2.2 SKYACTIV-D 150, a two-stage turbo diesel with 150 hp and 380 Nm that was built from October 2013 to March 2019. There is no catalog row for the 1.5 SKYACTIV-D 105, which was built from January 2016.

In the catalog the European diesel starts at 150 hp and 380 Nm and ends at 193 hp and 481 Nm with the GAN GT. So it gains 43 hp, more than any other engine in this generation. Those are the rated figures for this engine type, not a dyno result from your car.

SKYACTIV-G 120 and 165: what does the GAN GA+ add?

Each is a 2.0-liter engine with 210 Nm, and each runs on the GAN GA+. In the catalog, the SKYACTIV-G 120 gains 14 hp and 25 Nm, and the SKYACTIV-G 165 gains 20 hp and 25 Nm.

What about the smallest gas engine, the SKYACTIV-G 100?

This 1.5-liter engine has 100 hp and 150 Nm, and the catalog shows +12 hp and +18 Nm (+13 lb-ft) for it. Being the smallest engine in the generation, it gets the smallest absolute gain.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
