What makes the Mini Mini Cooper special
MINI Cooper S tune: supercharger first, turbo later
The R53 Cooper S, built until August 2006, runs a supercharger; the turbo R56 followed in November 2006. For a Mini Cooper S, that makes the R53 and the R56 two different cars with different needs. The R53 Cooper S was built from March 2002 to August 2006. Its 1.6-liter engine uses an Eaton M45 supercharger and makes 163 hp. The catalog has no row for the supercharged R53 Cooper S yet.
The turbo R56 Cooper S makes 174 hp, 184 hp from 2010, and the John Cooper Works version makes 211 hp. On early R56 Cooper S cars with the N14 engine, the timing chain and its tensioner can wear, so have them checked. So you match the module to your car's generation page and engine output, not to the Cooper S name alone.
The base Cooper 1.6 and the diesels
The European base Cooper 1.6 made 116 hp in the first generation, 120 hp in the R56 from 2006 and 122 hp from 2010 to 2013. U.S. spec sheets list the Cooper 1.6 at 115 hp for the 2002-2006 models and 121 hp for 2011-2013; the 121 hp car is the Cooper 1.6i row with 122 hp below. This page's catalog rows are the Cooper 1.6 with 122 hp and 160 Nm and the Cabrio 1.6 with 113 hp and 150 Nm, and both take the GAN GA+.
Those two rows carry European ratings, so on a U.S. car match by engine code and hp. The diesel Minis in the catalog are European-range engines: the One D with 90 hp, the Cooper D with 109 hp, later 112 hp, and the Cooper SD with 143 hp from April 2011.
Generations and chassis codes
The first generation is the R50 hatch, built from June 2001 to August 2006, plus the R52 convertible, built until August 2008. In the U.S. these cars are badged MINI Cooper and sold as Hardtop and Convertible. The R56 hatch debuted on November 18, 2006, and the R57 convertible followed in 2009. The F56 three-door arrived in March 2014 with a 1.5-liter Cooper and a 2.0-liter Cooper S; the F55 five-door came in October 2014, and the F57 convertible after that.
The U.S. F56 Cooper runs a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder rated at 134 hp through the 2024 model year. The current U.S. Cooper runs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 161 hp. Pick your row in the catalog by engine and hp.

In the catalog the GAN GA+ takes the Cooper 1.6 from 122 hp and 160 Nm to 137 hp and 179 Nm. Treat these as stated gains for the engine type, not dyno results from your car. On the Cooper 1.6, a naturally aspirated engine, the GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power.

Mini Cooper: plug-in module or flash tune, and what stays untouched?
A flash tune replaces the factory software in the engine control unit (ECU), which is a different method from a plug-in performance chip. The GAN module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, so the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched. The ECU software is never changed, and you can unplug the module any time, so your factory warranty is preserved.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
