GAN tuning module for Mini

Mini performance chip: more power, no ECU flash

The GAN module sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals. Unlike a flash tuner, it doesn’t rewrite your ECU software: your factory warranty is preserved, and the module can be removed at any time.

FAQ

Mini tuning FAQ

Supercharged or turbo Cooper S: which GAN GT figures apply to mine?

The R53 Cooper S is supercharged and makes 163 hp. From the R56 on, the Cooper S is a turbo. The supercharged R53 Cooper S has no row in the catalog. A turbo R56 Cooper S rated at 174 hp picks up 37 hp and 50 Nm. The 184 hp version picks up 39 hp and 50 Nm.

How much more power does a naturally aspirated MINI Cooper get from a plug-and-play performance chip?

Stock, the Cooper 1.6 makes 116 hp and 150 Nm. With the GAN GA+ it makes 130 hp and 168 Nm. The U.S. Cooper of 2011–2013 is a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter rated at 121 hp, the U.S. figure for the catalog's 122 hp Cooper 1.6, so use that row rather than the 116 hp one. The GAN GA+ tops out at 12% more power, which is the ceiling for a naturally aspirated engine. Treat these as stated gains for the engine type, not as a dyno reading of your own car.

What does a MINI Cooper S get from the GAN GT, and what about the diesels?

The Cooper S is a turbo from the R56 on, and every turbo Mini takes the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power. Take the European diesel range as an example. The Countryman R60 Cooper D (111 hp) gains 32 hp and 78 Nm, and the Cooper SD (143 hp) gains 41 hp and 88 Nm.

Plug-in performance chip or flash tune for a MINI?

MINI tuning splits into two methods. A flash tune rewrites the factory software in the engine control unit (ECU). The GAN tuning module instead sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. Checksums, flash counter and factory software all stay untouched. The engine keeps its factory protections. Your factory warranty is preserved. The ECU software never changes, and you can remove the module at any time.

Which GAN module fits the MINI Coupé and Roadster?

The Coupé (R58) and Roadster (R59) offer the same three engines: Cooper S at 184 hp, John Cooper Works at 211 hp and Cooper SD at 143 hp. The GAN GT covers all of them.

Does the GAN module affect my Mini factory warranty?

No. The module doesn’t change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your factory warranty is preserved. On top of that, GAN gives its own engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.

Plug-in performance chip or flash tuner: which should I choose?

A flash tuner rewrites the maps in your ECU, and the flash counter records it. The GAN module adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute.

About Mini engines

Mini engines: what to know before you tune

MINI Cooper tune: the badge hides three engine eras

Start with the engine era: the badge on the trunk lid stays the same, but the engine family under the hood keeps changing. BMW took over the MINI in 2001, and the engines since then fall into three eras. First comes the Tritec 1.6, then the Prince engines of the R56 family, and in the F generation the modular BMW gasoline and diesel engines.

Read the version name for the engine. One is the entry model, Cooper sits in the middle, D means diesel, and SD is the strongest diesel. U.S. badges run Cooper, Cooper S and JCW, so the European One, Cooper D and Cooper SD names are catalog labels you match by engine. Every Cooper S is force-fed. Only the hardware differs: a supercharger on the R53, a turbo on the R56 and Countryman R60, and a 2.0 turbo on the F56 and Countryman F60.

Tritec and Prince: the first two eras

The R50 and R52 of 2001–2006 run the naturally aspirated Tritec 1.6: 90 hp in the One, 116 hp in the Cooper. The R53 Cooper S adds a supercharger. With the GAN GA+, the One picks up 11 hp and 17 Nm and the Cooper 14 hp and 18 Nm. The Prince engines arrived in 2006. Two are naturally aspirated (N12, N16) and two are turbocharged (N14, N18).

A late R56 Cooper S sold here is a 1.6-liter turbo rated at 181 hp, the U.S. rating of the catalog's 184 hp Cooper S, so use that row. The R56 Cooper S with 184 hp takes the GAN GT and gains 39 hp and 50 Nm. On the Countryman R60, the 98 hp One runs the naturally aspirated N16; the GAN GA+ adds 12 hp and 18 Nm.

The BMW era: MINI Cooper S performance chip and more

The F56 One (102 hp) is a three-cylinder turbo, and so is the 1.5 in the 136 hp Cooper. Both take the GAN GT. Expect 30 hp and 52 Nm more on the One, and 39 hp and 64 Nm more on the Cooper. Through the 2024 model year, the U.S. Cooper S ran a 2.0-liter turbo rated at 189 hp, and the F56 Cooper S has no row of its own in the catalog yet.

The F60 Countryman Cooper S, a 2.0 turbo with 192 hp, gains 40 hp and 59 Nm. The U.S. Countryman S ALL4 of 2025 is a 2.0-liter turbo rated at 241 hp, well above that row, and has no row in the catalog yet. Diesels take the GAN GT as well. The Clubman F54 Cooper SD (190 hp) gains 35 hp and 105 Nm; the Cabrio F57 Cooper D (116 hp) gains 35 hp and 79 Nm.

Cooper S timing chain: what to check

If your Cooper S has the N14, check the timing chain and tensioner first. They are a known weak point, and a worn chain can rattle on a cold start. MINI's service bulletins cover N14 engines built until about May 2009. They trace the noise to a chain that is under-tensioned or a tensioner that isn't filled with oil.

Which Mini models are in the catalog

The catalog lists 9 models from Mini. The most engines are listed for the Mini (30), Clubman (22) and Countryman (22). The biggest gain among the models is on the Mini: up to +46 hp.

Naturally aspirated Mini engines

For 13 naturally aspirated engines from Mini, there’s the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% better fuel economy in ECO mode. It’s plug-and-play: you can install it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
