Opel Insignia tune: engines and generations

Opel Insignia performance chip: in the U.S. it was the Buick Regal

In the U.S., the Insignia A was sold as the Buick Regal, so U.S. shoppers look for it as a Regal tune. Regal Turbo and GS drivers focus on the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder, rated at 270 hp in the 2012 and 2013 GS and at 259 hp from 2014 to 2017. The catalog has no row for those U.S. ratings, so check your engine code before you pick a tuner. The catalog's Insignia A focus is the 2.0 CDTI diesel, and an Opel Insignia performance chip for it comes down to your exact hp. For scale, German KBA registrations from 2008 to 2016 show roughly 151,000 diesel and 43,900 gas cars, a diesel share of about 77 to 78%.

It was offered at 110, 131 and 160 hp from 2008, then at 163 hp from June 2013 and 170 hp from January 2015. The GAN GT is matched to each of these outputs separately, so pick the row that fits your hp. Add the 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI at 194 hp to the GAN GT list, along with the 1.6 CDTI at 136 hp, sold from July 2015. Since June 2013 the 2.0 CDTI has also come with 120 hp and, as the ecoFLEX, with 140 hp.

Gas engines and the OPC

The turbo gas engines are the 1.4 Turbo rated at 140 hp, the 1.6 Turbo at 179 hp and the 1.6 SIDI Turbo at 170 hp. Turbo gas power also includes the 2.0 Turbo and the 260 hp 2.8 V6 Turbo. All of them take the GAN GT, and so does the OPC with its 2.8 V6 Turbo. For the naturally aspirated 1.6 at 115 hp and the 1.8 at 140 hp, the match is the GAN GA+.

Body styles and years

The Insignia A was unveiled in July 2008 and launched in November 2008 as a sedan and a five-door hatchback. A Sports Tourer wagon joined in March 2009, followed by the OPC in summer 2009 and the raised Country Tourer in late 2013. The facelift came in June 2013, and production ended in April 2017. Its factory body code is G09, and it rides on the GM Epsilon 2 platform.

FAQ

Opel Insignia tuning FAQ

What does a GAN GT performance chip add to the Insignia 2.0 CDTI at 160 hp?

The A20DTH at 160 hp and 350 Nm moves to 206 hp and 445 Nm with the GAN GT, per the catalog. On turbo engines, GAN rates the GT at up to 30% more power. Treat these as the stated gains for this engine type, not dyno results from your own car.

How do you pick your Insignia 2.0 CDTI: 110, 131, 160 or 170 hp?

Go by output: the catalog has rows for the 110, 131, 160, 163 and 170 hp versions. Built between June 2013 and December 2014, the 163 hp version falls between the 160 and the 170. On the 170 hp version with 400 Nm, the catalog gain is 48 hp.

Is the Insignia OPC with the 2.8 V6 Turbo at 325 hp covered?

Yes. The 325 hp, 435 Nm OPC takes the GAN GT, and the catalog shows a gain of 55 hp. The 2018 to 2020 Buick Regal GS is a different car, with a naturally aspirated 3.6 V6 rated at 310 hp rather than the OPC's turbo V6. From April 2011 the Unlimited version ran without a speed limiter and reached 270 km/h.

Flash tuner or plug-in module for an Insignia diesel tune: what stays untouched?

A flash tuner rewrites the factory software in the engine control unit, and that is a different method from a plug-in module. The GAN module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, so the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay untouched. Your factory warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can come off at any time.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
