GAN tuning module for the Porsche 911 996

Porsche 911 996 tune: what changes

More power and torque with no ECU flash and no new parts – the module only adjusts the engine sensor signals. Your factory warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the module can be removed at any time.

What makes the Porsche 911 996 special

Porsche 911 996 tune: the 3.4 or the 3.6

The 996 was sold in the U.S. as the Carrera, so a 996 Carrera tune starts with your model year, because the year decides the engine. The 996.1 through 2001 has the 3.4; the 996.2 from model year 2002 has the 3.6. The catalog lists the Carrera 3.4 at 300 hp and 350 Nm and the Carrera 3.6 at 320 hp and 370 Nm. U.S. spec sheets rate the 3.4 at 296 hp for 1999 and 300 hp for 2000 and 2001, and the 3.6 at 315 hp, so match your car by engine size, not by hp alone.

The 996 was the first water-cooled 911, with a six-speed manual or the Tiptronic S. Both engines are naturally aspirated flat-sixes, so the performance chip is the GAN GA+. The 996 Turbo at 420 hp, the Turbo S at 450 hp and the later GT3 at 381 hp are not in the catalog. The first 996 GT3, at 360 hp, is on the Porsche 911 GT3 page.

IMS bearing: check it before you add power

The intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) of the M96 engine is the best-known weak point of the 996. If it fails, the valve timing is lost and the engine is destroyed, and the early 3.4 is the engine most often tied to such failures. Early cars used a dual-row bearing and later cars increasingly got a single-row design, so your car's year matters here. Before you buy, ask for proof that the bearing was inspected or replaced.

What owners say

What Porsche 911 owners say about GAN

★★★★★

Simple and convenient. Satisfied with result. I connected this device via the attached cable and hid it behind the pile floor covering. Up to 100 km, I notices the result: the throttle response at 1,2,3 gear is better, the fuel consumption did not change (I use the “Dynamic” mode). I think the result is good for such…

FAQ

Porsche 911 996 tuning FAQ

Does adding power change the IMS bearing risk on a 996?

No. A performance chip can't repair or replace the bearing, so have its condition checked first. Cylinder bore scoring is a second M96 issue to check for, and it comes up more for the 3.6 than for the 3.4.

How much power does the GAN GA+ add to a 996 Carrera, 3.4 or 3.6?

On the 3.4 the catalog goes from 300 hp and 350 Nm to 324 hp and 378 Nm; on the 3.6, from 320 hp and 370 Nm to 346 hp and 400 Nm. Those are stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your car. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power.

Porsche 996 ECU tune or a plug-in module?

An ECU tune puts new software into the engine control unit, while the GAN module adjusts sensor signals and comes off in minutes with no electronic or mechanical traces.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
