What makes the BMW 3 Series E36 special
BMW E36 tune for a rear-wheel-drive car on the street and the track
The E36 is a rear-wheel-drive car that's popular on track days. For any E36 tune the engine is what counts, and the catalog lists three naturally aspirated gas engines. BMW built the E36 from 1990 to 2000; the 2000 in the catalog marks the end of the Compact, not the start of the car. The 320i makes 150 hp and 190 Nm, with the M50 until 1995 and the M52 from 1994. The 328i has the M52 with 280 Nm from January 1995.
The U.S. 328i with the M52B28 inline-six lines up with that 328i row. The 318is has the 1.9-liter M44 with 180 Nm from 1996, while the 1.8-liter M42 before it had 175 Nm. Early U.S. 318i cars ran that M42 1.8-liter four. The U.S. E36 M3 has no row in the catalog yet.
The 320i with the GAN GA+
With the GAN GA+, the 320i goes from 150 hp and 190 Nm to 168 hp and 213 Nm. The 328i is the E36 six that most U.S. enthusiasts build around, and the GAN GA+ fits it as well. The gains are stated for the engine type, not measured on your car.

What does the GAN GA+ add to an E36 320i or 328i for track days?
On a naturally aspirated four or six, expect up to 12% more power from the GAN GA+.
What about the Nikasil bores on the early E36 M52 sixes?
On early M52 sixes built from 1994 to 1998, the Nikasil coating of the bores can wear when the engine runs on high-sulfur fuel. BMW switched to iron cylinder liners, and the later M52TÜ doesn't have this problem. The M50 in the 320i and 325i before 1995 isn't part of that story. Whatever the engine, check the aging plastic cooling parts before you add load, since overheating is a known E36 weak spot.
BMW E36 performance chip: how does GAN differ from a flash tune?
The GAN module sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, so the factory software stays untouched. It comes off in about a minute, and nothing is written to the ECU.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
