About the generation

What makes the BMW 3 Series E90 special

BMW E90 tune: September 2007 split the range

A BMW E90 tune depends on the build date, because the date decides which engine version your car has; this page is about engine power, not styling parts or body kits. U.S. E90s carried the 325i and 330i badges first and the 328i and 335i from the next model year. Europe's four-cylinder gas cars changed in September 2007, when the direct-injection N43 took over from the N46: 129 to 143 hp on the 318i, 150 to 170 hp on the 320i. The European diesels went from the M47 to the N47, with 163 to 177 hp for the 320d and 122 to 143 hp for the 318d.

The 325i stayed at 218 hp but swapped the 2.5-liter N52 for the direct-injection 3.0-liter N53. The September 2008 facelift put the 330d on the N57 with 245 hp, and in March 2010 the 320d reached 184 hp. The European 335i made 306 hp throughout, and in March 2010 the single-turbo N55 (one twin-scroll turbo) replaced the twin-turbo N54. U.S. cars made the same swap, with the 2011 335i the first on the N55.

Body codes and build dates

BMW built the E90 sedan until October 2011; the E91 Touring ran from September 2005 to May 2012. Americans know the Touring as the Sports Wagon. The E92 coupe ran from June 2006 to June 2013, and the E93 cabriolet until October 2013. Total E9x production was about 3.0 million cars, and 2007 peaked at more than half a million.

BMW E90 325i with the 2.5-liter or the 3.0-liter engine: which one is in the catalog?

Both engines make 218 hp. The 2.5-liter N52 (January 2005 to August 2007) pulls 250 Nm; the 3.0-liter N53 (from September 2007) pulls 270 Nm. The catalog's 218 hp / 270 Nm version is the 3.0-liter N53, and it takes the GAN GA+. The 2.5-liter N52 has no row of its own under the 3 Series; look for it as the 525i of the 5 Series E60.

Is the N47 timing chain a concern on a European 320d E90 from September 2007?

The N47 chain wears on the transmission side, and a metallic rattle from the rear of the engine warns you. Engines built from March 2007 to January 2009 were hit hardest, so have the chain checked from about 100 thousand km.

BMW E90 performance chip: what does it add to a 320i with 150 hp and with 170 hp?

The N46 takes 150 hp and 200 Nm to 168 hp and 224 Nm; the N43 takes 170 hp and 210 Nm to 190 hp and 235 Nm. Both are naturally aspirated, so both take the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power. The U.S. 328i, a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six at 230 hp, takes the GA+ too and matches the 328i row. Treat the figures as stated gains for the engine type, not as a dyno reading of your car.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
