About the generation

What makes the BMW 3 Series E46 special

BMW E46 tune: start with the engine, not the body style

A BMW E46 tune here means more engine power from a GAN performance chip, not body kits or styling parts. Germany's register held more than a hundred thousand E46 cars on January 1, 2025. The biggest groups there were the 316ti Compact at 116 hp, the 320Ci cabriolet at 170 hp and the 320i sedan at 170 hp, followed by the 318i at 118 hp and the 330Ci at 231 hp.

All of these groups have naturally aspirated gas engines, and such engines take the GAN GA+. On U.S. cars, the 323i at 170 hp and the 328i at 193 hp match rows in the table. U.S. ratings for the 325i (184 hp) and 330i (225 hp) are lower than the European 192 and 231 figures, but those catalog rows are the same engines.

European diesels and E46 body codes

The 320d went from 136 hp to 150 hp in September 2001 with the common rail M47TÜ. The 330d reached 204 hp in March 2003 with the M57TÜ. BMW built the sedan from April 1998 to February 2005 and the Touring from October 1999 to June 2005; the coupe ran until June 2006, the cabriolet until February 2007 and the Compact from June 2001 to December 2004. The body codes are E46/4 for the sedan, E46/3 for the Touring and E46/2 for the coupe.

BMW E46 320d, 136 hp or 150 hp: which one is it, and what does a GAN GT performance chip add?

The 136 hp car is the earlier M47, and the 150 hp car is the common rail M47TÜ from September 2001. The 150 hp engine goes from 150 hp and 330 Nm to 193 hp and 421 Nm with the GAN GT. The 320d is a European engine; the U.S. E46 was sold as the 323i, 328i, 325i and 330i. These gains are stated for the engine type, not measured on your own car.

E46 swirl flaps and the 330d automatic: what matters before a tune?

On the M47TÜ and M57 diesels, the mounting screws of the intake swirl flaps can work loose, and a flap can drop into a cylinder. Blanking off or removing the flaps is the usual fix. The 330d with 204 hp and 410 Nm has an automatic transmission rated for 390 Nm, so software caps its torque at 390 Nm. The module leaves the transmission alone, so that 390 Nm limit stays in place.

What can an E46 performance chip do for a 320i or 318i?

Both are naturally aspirated, so they take the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power. On a 170 hp engine like the 320i, that works out to about 20 hp at most. On a six-cylinder E46, go through the cooling system first: water pumps, expansion tanks, thermostats and plastic hoses are known failure points.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
