What makes the BMW 3 Series F3x special
BMW F30 tune: the engine changed in July 2015, so the build date matters
U.S. dealers sold the F30 sedan as the 320i, 328i, 330i, 335i and 340i, plus the diesel 328d. The F30 is the sedan, the F31 the Touring and the F34 the Gran Turismo, and facelift sales started on July 25, 2015. Until July 2015 the European 320d F30 made 184 hp from the N47 diesel; since then the B47 makes 190 hp. The build date picks the GAN performance chip for a 320d, because it tells you which engine the car has. Not every diesel changed at once: the 325d kept its 218 hp N47 until 2016, then moved to the 224 hp B47.
Through the facelift the 330d stayed on the N57 at 258 hp and 560 Nm, and the 313 hp 335d stayed as it was. On the gas side, the 320i kept its 184 hp as the B48 replaced the N20. At 252 hp the 328i turned into the 330i, and at 326 hp the 335i turned into the 340i with the B58. U.S. ratings differ a little from these European figures: the U.S. 330i is rated at 248 hp, which is the 252 hp 330i row in the table.
GAN GT numbers for the 320d
The 320d begins at 190 hp and 400 Nm; with the GAN GT it reaches 230 hp and 484 Nm. For a BMW 335i N55 tune or a 340i B58 tune, the U.S. ratings of 300 hp and 320 hp are the 335i row at 306 hp and the 340i row at 326 hp. On an N55 335i, have the charge pipe checked for cracks before you add boost or power. The gains are stated for the engine type, not measured on your car.

GAN performance chip or a flash tune on a BMW F30 320d?
A flash tune alters the parameters in the control unit, and it usually calls for diagnosis and dyno measurements. A performance chip sits in the line between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts what they send. The GAN module works the second way: the ECU software is never changed, the module can be removed at any time, and your factory warranty is preserved.
Does the N47 timing chain matter on a BMW F30 320d?
The N47 stayed in the F30 up to 2015 (and in the 325d up to 2016), with its chain at the transmission end. The B47 that arrived in July 2015 is a different engine. On U.S. 320i and 328i cars from the N20 years, the timing chain and its guides are the part to have checked.
BMW F30 320i: N20 or B48 under the hood?
With the N20 until July 2015, and with the B48 afterward, the 320i made 184 hp and 270 Nm.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 tune?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU flash tune without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
